CROATIA BY CAR

Documents: To enter Croatia, a driver’s licence, an automobile registration card and evidence about insurance are necessary.

Allowed speed:
- 50 km/h - within residential areas
- 80 km/h - outside of residential areas
- 100 km/h - on major motor routes
- 130 km/h - on motorways
- 80 km/h - for motor vehicles with a house trailer
- 80 km/h - for buses and buses with a light trailer

Rain: Please adjust the speed on the wet roadway. Driving with headlights on is recommended during both the day and the night.

Mobile phones: Do not use mobile phones while driving

Allowed quantity of alcohol in blood: 0.5 per mill

Use of seat belts is obligatory

Petrol stations:
Open from 7 a.m. till 5 or 6 p.m. every day; in the summer season till 10 p.m. Petrol stations on duty in major cities and on major international roads are open on the 24-hour basis.
All petrol stations sell: Eurosuper 95, Super 98, Normal and Euro Diesel fuel, and in major cities, gas as well.

Road-toll:
Zagreb-Karlovac-Vukova Gorica, Zaprešić-Krapina, Zagreb-Velika Kopanica, Sv. Helena-Komin, Varaždin-Goričan; for the three-lane two-way road Rijeka-Kupjak, the Učka tunnel and the Krk bridge.

Basic obligations in case of traffic accident:
First inform the police about the traffic accident (Tel: 92).
Secure the place of accident (set up a triangle) and undertake the measures for elimination of new dangers.
Wait for the arrival of the police.
Police officers carrying out on-the-spot investigation can provide you with the information regarding the procedure in case of traffic accident, Croatian insurance companies, vehicle repair shops and other relevant information.
In case of any damage to the vehicle, you must obtain a police report on the damage to the vehicle, without which you cannot pass the state border.

Fines for the most frequent traffic violations:
- Driving within residential areas at the speed exceeding the allowed speed by more than 30 km/h or outside of residential areas by more then 50 km/h - HRK 500

- Driving under the influence of alcohol - HRK 500 + revoking of driver’s license
- Not adjusting the speed to characteristics and the condition of the road and to other conditions - HRK 200
- Irregular parking and stopping - HRK 100
- Not fastenin the safety belt - HRK 100
In order to make sure that the fine is paid and a measure of precaution executed, or in order to ensure the presence at the police court proceeding, the authorised police officer can keep a foreign citizen’s passport until the completion of the proceedings, and up to 48 hours at the longest.
