Diving in the Adriatic is legally regulated by the Rule Book on Sports-Recreational Diving issued by Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Traffic and Communications. The main diving organisation in Croatia is the Croatian Diving Association, which unifies diving and training in co-operation with the ministries. There are various internationally recognised licences for diving programs: BCAS, CMAS, IANTD, NAUI, PADI and SSI.
In order that you could dive to the depth of 18 m, you should have the initial diving course (the price: 225 - 250 euro) and the diving license (price: 14 euro). The diving license is issued by diving clubs and diving centres, ant it is valid for 365 days after its issuing. If you wish to dive at the depth of 40 m, you must pass the advanced course. In case you itend to be engaged in underwater fishing, you must buy a license for recreational fishing at the "Arbun", Recreational Fishing Associ ation in Makarska (phone 613-550, Setaliste sv. Petra 2, 8:00 am - 12:00 am). Licenses for one day, seven days and several days are issued.
In Croatia, diving is allowed almost everywhere along the coast for the moment, except for the zones protected as cultural goods, where you can dive only with an approval by diving centres which have the concession for those territories. With the presentation of your diver's card, you can buy diving equipment in diving clubs, rent the complete diving equipment (price from 15 to 25 euro per day), fill the bottles (price: 0,5 euro per litre of compressed air) or they can take you to your location. If you wish to dive from a boat, you will pay averagely 25 euro.
Basic advise: 1. Always dive in pair, never alone 2. Always mark the place of diving with a diver's buoy (red coloured with a white line), which means that divers are within the 300 metre range. 3. Always dive with equipment that is in good order 4. Arrange and check your equipment yourselves 5. Plan each diving, carry it out and log it into the diving booklet.
Do not ever: 1. Exceed the limits of your capabilities 2. Eat too much before diving - consequences can be unpleasant 3. Consume alcohol, medication or drugs before diving. 4. Go to the height of 1000 m above the sea level or fly in an airplane within the terom of 24 hours after diving.
